just finished reading

Two books featuring Mormon Fundamentalism/polygamy: Brady Udall's The Lonely Polygamist, and David Ebershoff's The 19th Wife. My double review here. Anyone else read either?

I've read the 19th Wife for a book club. I liked it, though like you I agree maybe it could have lost a chapter or two. At times I felt more invested with the story of Ann Eliza than Jordan.

My biggest gripe was the accounts from Ann Eliza's son as he sort of destroyed Ann Eliza's image and basically the way the author was trying to set her up. I dunno, maybe it was intentional, but even after reading the author's note I still decided that I could have done without reading Ann Eliza's sons take on the matter.

I've never read a book on polygamy. Read a few sociological texts with stuff about it in them.

Hey Moonrat,

Just added these to my holds list at the library. I loved, and was riveted by, Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven. It turned me on to really looking more closely into the Mormon faith and, in turn, at other world religions.

Under the Banner of Heaven illustrates the most radical interpretations of the faith and, in the case of that book, the faith became a scapegoat for murder (ah, religion...).

It's a fascinating religious subculture. I'm looking forward to trying these titles on for size...

I really liked "The Chosen One" by Carol Lynch Williams. It's a YA book and has the most exciting slow-motion chase you've ever read.

If you're interested in a really good story & a great overview of Mormonism/Church of Latter Day Saints and its spinoffs, I highly recommend Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven. Disturbing story about a group of brothers mixed up in a fundamentalist sect and Krakauer writes an accessible history of the religion.

I haven't read The 19th Wife, but I'm struck by the cover similarity with The Chosen One. Anyone else see this?
