Write Your @ss Off Day
There was great enthusiasm to the Write Your @ss Off Day proposal. Awesome!
Some people who don't like to use the word @ss are calling it a Write-a-Thon, but I'm sticking with @ss because I enjoy the @sign.
Remember, this is a day (8 hours) devoted to your writing--that can constitute a number of activities, but should be about celebrating your creation. JES calls it an unbirthday for your writing.
With so many people playing, we're going to have some flexibility. So really, this next weekend, February 5-8 (to include Friday and Monday) will be Write Your @ss Off Weekend, and each participant can choose the day that works best with their sched (Friday 2/5, Saturday 2/6, Sunday 2/7, or Monday 2/8).
JES, our fearless inspiration in this endeavor, has created an interactive map of Write Your @ss Off-ers! You can log in and leave your pin. In theory, we might even find meet-up groups on the map if that's what we're into. Or it's also just cool to make a little pin for yourself.
I think I'm going to shoot for Saturday 2/6, personally. Thanks for the incentive, all!

I think i'll have to go with Saturday too.
I chose Sunday.
Awesome. I'm putting myself down for Friday when my kids are at school.
Do I hafta? ~she whined~
I wrote my @ss of yesterday...
ooooh difficult, that is my birthday weekend, so Sunday, my normal go to day, is out.
maybe Friday...
I'll play!
YAY! Saturday for me (and I'll have to see if I can figure out that getting pinned thing!)
Just a note to anyone who wants to use the map: when you place your marker, PLEASE enter something like a name (even a pseudonym) to help everyone figure out which ones are real markers and which ones might have been dropped there by accident.
Thanks so much!
[Reminder -- if any questions or suggestions about using the map, you can email me at runningaftermyhat AT johnesimpson DOT com.]
I calling for the weekend as well -let's try for Saturday (but if I break it up for 4 hrs Sat and 4 on Sun - will that count?)
I'm in for Saturday! I'm going to prod some of my NaNo friends into getting together for a little event in the DFW area if I can.
Steena -- no one's keeping score. :)
HA! The Husband is OFF! Woot! I didn't get to participate last year because he was working. Yay!!
I'm going for Sunday! I'm so excited. This is just the incentive I need to get started on my next novel.
It's exciting seeing how many other people are on the map now! Thank goodness for an empty house to write in mwhahaha!
NaNoWriMo? Not gonna happen. Write Your @ss Off Day? Sign me up! I may even do more than one day...
I say it's Write Your Fingers Off Day. They're what's moving, yes?
It'll be a cross between that and Yakking My Tongue Off With Other Writers Day.
Wow - this sounds like fun! Can I make it happen? We'll see - probably Sunday tho...
Hooray! I'll probably do Sunday. Now I just need to figure out what happens next in my WIP! :)
I'm a tentative yes on participation. I am hoping to have my current WiP finished before then so it might become a revision day.
I'm in. 2 half-days -- Friday and Saturday. My tushie already feels smaller... Great idea, JES! Tx for organizing... Peace, Linda
This is an awesome idea!! I signed up for Saturday. I'm going to take my laptop into my closet and pray no one finds me!!
What a great idea! I picked Saturday.
I've been translating my @ss off (8-12 hours a day) every day for a week, and will continue to do so this weekend, so a whole day of pure writing next weekend would be pretty amazing, and a great way to storm my next project.
So far I'm the only one on the map representing the Middle East, I guess that means no meet-up for me...
Moonie, I am with you! :)
Hmm... I have to choose my day...
*thinks*
Great idea! Me thinks it will be Saturday... when I can pawn kiddies off to gramma's house... *grin*
Current # of participants mapped: 47.
Note that although the default view of the map includes pretty much just North America, if you zoom out you'll see that Moonie's got WYAO fans in Europe, Australia, the Mideast, and Indonesia. Boo-ya!
PS: "Mideast" = "Middle East," duh.
the map is really cool and makes me happy.
however, the one other pin near New York is unlabeled!! who is my mystery neighbor participant?! curses, the curiosity will kill me!!! it could be anyone i meet on the subway, and we'll never know!
Yo. Long time reader, first time caller. ;)
I'm in for the write-a-thon. Working on the second Dark Elite novel on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Good luck, everyone!
Well, rats. Why did I think this was going to happen *this* weekend and NOT next weekend?
I've already taken tomorrow off!
On the other hand, I don't work alternate Fridays, so I've got next Friday off anyway. :)
<< muses >>
Perhaps I could have TWO "Work your @ss off days..."
Kelly -- it's no particular weekend, I think. :) The one(s) everyone has been talking about is (are) more or less completely arbitrary. Go for it!
Me likey! I'll probably end up with Monday, Feb. 8
I'm with you, Carleen: eight hours on the 8th! Thanks for the link!
I've signed up for Saturday and added my marker to the map. (I'm a map geek.) :)
I don't know if I can pull it off next weekend, but I've got the end of February reserved for a writing retreat - 2.5 glorious days of writing my @ss off - and I'm counting down!
Whooee! I'm off on 2/6 so I think I can join in. Except for the big old party I am scheduled to help cook for. But they won't miss my gumbo...right?
word veri = gindsh
doesn't that sound Yiddish?
I blogged about WYAO! (Rambled perhaps a bit too long, but I've given the history...I plan to tell a few of the writer's groups I'm in to give it a shot.)
I've also put together my list of what I hope to accomplish...
http://kellyaharmon.com/?p=1500
58 pegs on the board and counting!
This is exactly what I need kick my @ss into gear. I've been slacking on the writing this week. I'm signed up for Saturday. Maybe I'll try a practice run of it this weekend to get warmed up for next weekend. :)
(Word verification is Mater. I love that guy.)
My @ss needs this. I'm in.
I picked Friday and then couldn't log in; but I hereby assert I did write my @ss off on Friday, a good 10 hours worth.
I have Monday off--now I know how I'm going to spend it!
I am on for today, Sunday 1/31. Not sure how we track what we wrote, but I'm in anyhow.
I'm trying for Monday, even though I still have my regular job in the evening. (only 4 1/2 hrs, not too bad)
For anyone still watching this thread...
Kelly Harmon had the right idea in her comment above: don't just DO it but celebrate it, jump up and down, and blog about it if/when you do it. (Or heck, even if you don't.) Kelly's own blog post about it was great!
(For each of you who's added your marker to the WYAO map, if you've got a blog you might also consider adding a link to your own blog post about how the day went. Just click on your marker and select the "Edit" button, then paste the URL/Web address into the Description field. I know I, for one, will be interested to see how it's gone for everyone.)
P.S. The map's currently got close to 70 locations marked, including the one for the first participant opting for a Tuesday WYAO Day, right square in the middle of the North American continent. Besides the sites mentioned earlier, it now shows participants in Alaska, Okinawa, Baghdad, and nowhere-in-particular in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
Calling out from West Sumatra, Indonesia, where I'm living in a little village helping with post-earthquake reconstruction. I'm looking forward to being with a virtual community doing that which I (we) love best!
I pick Saturday. That way I can lounge about all day on Sunday guilt-free.
I think I'm gonna go with Sunday or Monday... maybe both. :)
ok, I'm in too. Lets make it, ummm saturday. 8 hours on saturday. I am IN!
Sunday in Saint Paul, MN, 4 to midnight. I'm pumped!
I'm late to the game, but not too late, right? I'm in, too, and I've added my pin to the map.
Hi Melissa:
JES has taught me that it's never too late (or too early) to participate. :)
I'm playing again today. I've posted my official "to do" list over at my blog: http://kellyaharmon.com/?p=1589
(Posting it makes me accountable...keeps me from playing solitaire....)
Good luck to you (and everyone else playing along this weekend)!
I'm going for Saturday too. Which, as I am in Japan, happens to have started 3 hours ago. Should I stay up and start writing, or go to sleep and try and get up early enough to have a long and productive day? Decisions, decisions...
I pick Sunday the 7th of Feb. I did seven hours last Saturday, and this is a good motivator to make sure I follow up and keep writing! I want to finish this draft by the end of Feb and I'm not even halfway through yet so I need to write my @ss off.
It doesn't have to be 8 hours all at once, does it? Because that's not really how I write. I tend to write about 50 words, then watch a half an hour of tv. Then I write 50 more words, then check my Facebook and get distracted leaving comments on statuses for the next hour. Then I write 50 words, and go find something to munch on. Etc, etc, etc.
In any case, I'm in.
Just took a look at the map, wow! Did my eight hours on Monday and loved every minute of it! K.
