New Year's Resolutions etc
Hi there. So how many people said they'd like to do a Write Your @ss Off Day? Because my fingers are getting kind of itchy over here.
JES, you fearlessly led us to a Write Your @ss Off Day last year. You reminded us that the point was not to write for a day but to devote a day to your writing--in whatever form that took. What do you have to say about this? Are you happy if we continue your tradition?
Anyone else on board? Should we set a date?

Sign me up!
I'm actually planning to spend most of this weekend writing. Can't wait! I have a hard time writing in the evenings during the week because I'm usually mentally drained from work and kids.
Yes, sounds very good. I can see enjoying a day devoted to writing.
Knowing that others are doing the same thing on the same day makes it celebratory/fun!
I'd love a write your @ss off day, but please make it a weekend. I have to work. :)
As long as it's on a day when I don't have to be somewhere, I'm in! Last year I was in the clutches of major writer's block but this year I think I'll do much, much better.
I second the weekend-day lobby. I'd love to join others in a day of writing... it would give me a chance to just write and write regardless of how it turns out :)
Oh yes please! It'll probably have to be Sunday for me though, that's my next day off. :)
I'm in. Of course, I've been doing an average of about one WYAOD per month since last year's!
That would be wonderful, as long as I'm not working that day. tends to cut into the writing my ass off time.
i'd be on board, depending on the day of the week (being as that i have a "pay the bills" job during the week).
A sunday would be awesome...
Yikes. Under the circumstances, it'd be sorta tacky for me to say Oh hell no, no WAY! So sure, I'm in.
The one thing I hope people will remember is that (despite the title, which I ripped off from the great folks at the New York Writers Coalition) I never wanted or meant it to be a day-long write-a-thon. As you said, Moonie, the idea is to just give a day (actually just 8-ish hours) to your writing: write if you want, and/or spend the time researching agents or markets, and/or re-reading the book that inspired you to write the one you're trying to write... anything. A specific calendar date doesn't matter, either: make it a day when you know for certain you can devote the time without being distracted by guilt or other obligations.
Think of the difference this way: you're not planning a wedding to your writing; you're renewing your vows. You're throwing your writing an unbirthday party.
And, as was true last year, I'll be interested to see what sorts of days creative folks come up with!
Yes, please, sign me up! And it doesn't matter what day it is. For me, the point is to make my writing a priority for that day, even if it has to be fitted in around work, kids, stuff, whatever. Just like every other day.
I think us weekenders are winning so far. I'd love to do it! :)
I'd love to do this!
But I prefer a weekday...so that I have a legitimate excuse to take a day off from the day job. Weekends are just too packed around my house to devote so much time to writing...
what if we declared it Write Your @ss Off Weekend, and people could pick ONE day, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, OR Monday depending on their schedules? Then we could report in blogosphere on progress etc.
I can set Saturday aside this weekend. This weekend work for everybody for a preliminary? We can start up a monthly tradition so people can opt in or out, too, a la Steve's comment.
Sounds like a good plan to me. I need a push to meet my word-count goal this month anyway.
This weekend would be phenomenal. I need a kick in the pants.
I'd love to join you but I only get my plaster cast off (touch wood) this weekend so may not be up to writing my arse off this coming weekend... Can I join up in a few weeks' time?
Word verification; fonties. Fonts for your underclothing?...
I'm in -- any day's a good one.
At risk of starting a stampede...
I set up a little map thingumabob for people who want to commit to this thing. Anyone can view the map, which is here. However, you must log in to the CommunityWalk site to drop a marker at your location. (After which you can edit it, relocate it, and so on -- but only your own.)
Note that when you place (or edit) the marker, you need to assign a "category" to it. The way I set this up is that each day of the week is its own category. So you can (a) instantly see which categories are preferred, where, and (b) limit the map view to just one category or another. I myself tend to be something of a loner, but I imagine the more social-networking folks out there might want to organize local WYAO activities of some kind.
(Let me know [runningaftermyhat AT johnesimpson DOT com] if any problems or suggestions. This is the first time I set up a map at this site.)
I'm in. Making it the weekend, so people could pick their days is awesome. Saturdays and Sundays are out for me because there's too much going on with the kids, but I can do it on Friday. (Yay for them being in school!)
Count me in!!!
How fun! I'm in for Sunday!
I'm interested in the physics of this. What was the average loss in inches or pounds last year? Usually for me, writing for 8 hours a day has the effect of adding ass, not taking it off. I'd love to learn how to literally write it off...
;o)
I wanna play!
Count me in! I love the weekend idea.
If it's any day between a Friday and a Sunday I'm in. With school in the week, the weekends are better times for writing.
Cool! I was planning on this weekend anyways.
Also, love the idea of committing one day/month to this. I was going to suggest that earlier, but thought everyone would think I was nuts (believe it or not, that happens fairly regularly with me).
I'm in! This weekend?
I'm in.
No dumb blonde jokes, but my icon is in the middle of the ocean. I like it there.
Chris: HAHA! Well, SOMEBODY has to represent the Republic of the Marianas Trench...
It would have to be a Sunday for me, that's the only guaranteed day off I get. But that said I think setting any date to WRAO would be a good thing.
I could do it this Saturday.
I'm in! The WYAO Weekend idea sounds great -- busy folks can pick a favourable day, while really ambitious types could always take it literally and spend the whole weekend on their writing.
I'd love to do one! I've never done one before. Weekends are best. :)
Totally on board, Moonie!
Promise it'll be on a Saturday or Sunday and I'm in like Flynn and Quinn and Jin and... you get the point.
I'm in. Boy do I need this!
you. and me. writing date. followed by either 1. karaoke or 2. yummy food. very soon.
I'm in!!
(If it's a weekend day...)
Okay, sure.
I've got three writing groups meeting this weekend: one through my college, NaNoWriMo (we had so much fun in November we decided to meet once a month), and my crit group. Fun times await!
By all means, sign me up. I can't skip class or anything like that, but I can shove homework and email into the adjacent days.
Saturday, maybe. Somebody yell at me if I don't, A)finish this short story, B) work on editing this flash fiction, and C) yak for a few hours with other local writers.
I'm gonna try...maybe I'll even do something writerly like take my netbook to a cafe or something.
Sounds like a brilliant idea. Count me in.
Great! Let's kill ourselves!
Count me in for Saturday or Sunday. And I think a monthly Write your A§§ off day is a great idea!
Count me in, I need the motivation at the moment! I'm picking Sunday for writing because Saturday will probably be spent finishing The House of the Spirits (which only turned up today). You do like to keep us busy Moonie! :)
So is this open to newcomers? Cause I would love to do a write your @ss off!
it's open to everyone! all the time!
Hi! This is awesome! NY Writers Coalition is going to officially do Write Your A** Day online on June 12th, and info will be launched soon on our website! We've done it for 4 years in NYC only (thanks to JES for linking to us), but we will be offering a whole package of activities so people can spend that day writing wherever they are :) check us out at www.nywriterscoalition.org if you want. We will do our best to spread the word as soon as our the Write Your A** Off site is launched.
NYWC -- very cool... thanks for the great inspiration!
