Robert the Publisher's Gem of the Day
Sales Manager: We need really awesome blurbs to make this one work. We should get T.C. Boyle, Umberto Eco, and Saul Bellow, definitely.
RtP: You got it. I can get those.
Publicist: Saul Bellow is dead.
Sales Manager: He is?
RtP: Yes, he died about 4 years ago. But I can still get a blurb from him.
[Robert's got friends in HIGH places, apparently.]

Thanks for the laugh! Those must be some GOOD friends... I'd be afraid to keep them too close. That's just me though! I'm just sayin'
Wow. Just... wow.
If I gave him a sheet of paper, could he get an autograph too?
LOL! This might be why I've never purchased a book based on a blurb.
Hilarious.
Ha! I heart Robert.
Moonie, I just noticed you're reading My Antonia - I did a book club series of blog posts on that one a few years ago. (Unfortunately, the blogging community is no longer, so I can't send you the links... ashame, too, the discussion in the comments was awesome). Let me know if you post something on it.
Good stuff.
Years ago, when I was a CRM for Barnes and Noble, we got a list of all the authors who were going to be touring in the coming months. A prominent name on the list was Edward Gorey...who'd been dead about five years at that point. When I mentioned this to someone higher up in the company, asking if it was a mistake, I was told no, no mistake, Gorey was touring.
I then dreaded the day I'd receive an urn with instructions on how to do the seance for his signing.
(If I remember correctly, what was really happening was that an editor who'd done a study of Gorey's work was going to be touring but the editor didn't get credited in any of the promo material, just Gorey. I suppose, given his work, the idea of the dead author showing up for the signing had a lot of appeal to his fans.)
ROFL!...can't breathe...laughing too hard...can't see through the tears...
This is a very *special* industry, isn't it? :P
Brian F--your comment made me laugh out loud!
That is screaming awesome, and a much needed belly-laugh in my otherwise insane day.
Thank you :)
Heh heh. RtP sounds like a kindred spirit to that Hollywood mogul, what's his name, the guy who famously said a verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on.
I hope someone asks me for a blurb after I'm dead. I'd be delighted! Uhm, maybe. And I hope that's a long time off
Maybe blurbs from the dead will draw the paranormal crowd...
Funny!
I want Robert to get me a blurb! This was hilarious!
Merry--I'm about to start! Well, after FAREWELL TO ARMS, and between GRAVITY'S RAINBOW and the entire rest of the wheel of time series. so it might take me awhile ;)
This is too funny!
ROFL
