Spontaneous Self-Organization, or the History of American Chinese Food
This clip of Jennifer 8 Lee talking about the history of American Chinese food is awesome. The rally monkey turned off a reality TV show to come watch it with me (and then we, um, ordered some General Tso).
Thanks for the link, Paca.

Thank you for sharing that link, I really enjoyed watching it.
mymmnm, mandarin chicken and hot and sour soup.
Emma Chen from the Red Chamber in Hyde Park Mall in Johannesburg's northern suburbs has THE best Chinese food. When next you're in Jozi, Moon Rat, I'll take you there to test for yourself! :)
She was on the Colbert Report last summer, I think. The book's really interesting (and makes you want to eat Chinese food like crazy).
The Missus and I have an ongoing debate about General Tso's. It's almost -- almost -- the only thing I order anymore from our favorite takeout place, a practice which (to her way of thinking) seems an implied snub of what is really a diverse menu.
First time I ever had it (sometime in the mid-'80s, central NJ, maybe Bound Brook area?) I flipped. That restaurant didn't make it all that sweet, and included some blazing hot peppers in their recipe as well. Have spent 20 years looking for a place that prepares it the same way.
These TED talks are great.
Yay, I'm linked!
