book-buying world-savers unite!

So this movement has kinda taken off. Via the facebook group I found this blog, which writer Karen Dionne started to let book-buyers log in their purchases toward a common goal (1 million books!). All you have to do is leave a comment on the post. She'll log it in and use it to generate one of those thermometer thingies so you can watch us reach our goal!!

Right now, we're at, umm, like 500. But the future is before us!

How cool is that?!

I simply can no longer afford books. As much as I love them, they are now an unnecessary expense for me.

Things I can also no longer afford after more than three years of unemployment: dental care, health care, new glasses, vet visits for the cats, clothes that are work-appropriate, groceries (yes, sometimes I can't afford food these days...thanks, President Bush!).

The idea of buying books to save an industry is a nice one, but realistically, I need money before I can do that. And I know an awful lot of former publishing-employees in my position right now.

This is vaguely awesome. I linked to your previous post on this and completely agree with the sentiment!

I'll chime in over there. I've been on a buying binge lately.

Can I count retroactively the 200+ books I bought this year? (I'm on buying hiatus seeing as I just committed to a mortgage on a second house.)

Sarah: that is... shocking. I will have to make up for you.

Written: apparently, they're very loose in their definition of "recent" history, so i think your purchases DO count. Geez, 200 books?! You deserve some credit for that!

I have a huge tbr (to be read) pile, moonie. My exact count from Amazon is 179, excluding CDs.

Just bought the hardback of American Lion (a biography of Andrew Jackson) for my dad for Christmas! I'm so on this challenge!

The idea is cool, but that blog you link to crashed my browser 3 times :(

I wish I'd kept track during the year. Maybe not 200! But I blogged about this too (ignoring a few naysayers who want us to embrace e-books instead) and logged my recent purchases. Have we reached 1M?
