The Book Club Cookbook
Was everyone else already familiar with this site? It's a book club forum online. The authors put together a cookbook of things you can prepare for and eat with your book club so the recipes match the book content. Genius. Now if only I belonged to a real-life book club. I don't know where we'd serve the food around here. But their list includes a couple of old favorite books of mine that I can see would be really good book club options (you know, if I had a book club).
Anyway, apparently the featured authors each submit a recipe to go with their book--Elizabeth Strout (author of OLIVE KITTERIDGE) is featured today because of a donut recipe. It also looks like they're trying to grow their list. I can't believe I've never heard of this--I'm writing to my publicity department right now.

This looks like a terrific site, and as I was perusing it, I was thinking "Damn! This is close to the Book Roast angle. Only better."
But then I saw the rates begin at $950, and we're free over at the Book Roast. Neener to them. (But it's still a great site...)

awesome timing! my students just decided that for their final they wanted to cook something related to their favorite book and then write an essay about the connections between the book and the food. thanks a lot!

That's really funny - on my desk I have a copy of 'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee' (my choice for our book club, hosting dinner next week), and my cuttings book of recipes, trying to decide what to cook. Had thought of 'cooking around the book' - but her dish is 'butterflied lamb'. How on earth do you butterfly lamb???
Cool! That's one of my marketing ideas, actually! A friend with a successful cooking blog is going to create recipes that complement my book-club type novel, should the need arise. :)
Someone save me! Combining my two favorite things, books and food, it's like some sort of nirvana...but it would also probably be hell on my health, lol. I want those donuts!

Dunno if you're still following this thread, Moonie, but on a related subject I thought you might be interested in the recently published Lost In the Supermarket: An Indie Rock Cookbook. Amazon's product description says, in part, "...merging the axiom 'You are what you eat' with its updated mantra 'You are who you listen to.'"

Sounds familiar to a show that used to come on TV “Dinner and a Move” where the hosts would prepare a meal based on the theme of the movie. Never thought about doing it with books. That is almost a Duh kind of thing.
I find that just strange. But then I've never belonged to a book club. Food does seem to be a common thread there.
