I have officially read ZERO of the National Book Award noms

Fiction or nonfiction.

Any recs on where to start?

Anyone feel something is flagrantly missing here? What was the best book you've read in 2008? (I'll think on mine and get back to you.)

I'm too strapped for cash to buy books in hardback, so I tend to be a year or more behind in my reading. Thus I haven't read any of the nominees either. I don't even remember reading reviews of them, but I seem to recall there being a small amount of blogger buzz about THE UNDERNEATH, one of the YA nominees.

Goodness, I haven't read any either. LOL.

Nope, haven't read any of those. But the one I find most tempting at the moment is Scibona's THE END.

I'm so embarrassed. I haven't read them either, but will now.

Um, how about starting with the one published by Graywolf?

:-P

'What's missing?' How about loved and read? As a writer, I would trade any number of prizes for people actually reading and enjoying the work. Of the list, the only name I recognise is the author of 'Home' (and I tried really, really hard with Gilead because it is one of *those* books but it just didn't reach me). Loads of reviews said how seminal the book is - so it's no doubt my failing.

E. Lockhart's "Disreputable." This book is so intelligent, so witty, so feminist it makes your day.

I haven't read any of them either, and even more surprising, I haven't *bought* any of them yet. Usually I'd have picked up one or two of the nominees by chance.

I'm so far behind on reading what I own, though, that if I tried to pick a book I'd read this year I'd probably find out it was published in 2005. :/

What's blatantly missing is The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.

I bought Home the day it came out but haven't gotten to it--I loved Gilead (but not as much as Housekeeping). I thought I was pretty up on current books but I haven't even heard of the others.

Hey I haven't read any of them either! We should give ourselves awards for this! Or let's have a party! woo hoo!!!

Oh hey - I just bought the Underneath the other day. But haven't actually read it yet. So I still get an award right?

I also have Sawtelle and started reading and loving it. Why it's not on there... ??

I've been concentrating on supporting the books of my blogging friends.

I have not read any of these either. I read old books, hand me downs, actually. From well read people that take pity on me when I bemoan my no book to read status. Anyone want to lend me any? Grin.
