at first I was like, big deal, there's some guy named Michael Phelps, what's wrong with everybody?!

But then I watched him win the 200m butterfly.

I'm converted.

My baby sister (hey, 19 is still "baby" when you're somebody's younger sibling) is a swimmer and met Phelps when he came to our hometown years ago. She used to have the biggest crush on him.

Then he got smacked with a big old DUI. I'm not sure it cured the crush, but she stopped saying she wanted to marry him.

For the next two weeks or so, I'll give a hoot about swimming. After that...probably not. Sorry, swimming.

Did you see the relay last night? Wow, we really stuck it to the French.

Yeah, I was very ambivalent towards Phelps. Like, he's very good, but wow, the constant "Will he win SEVEN gold medals?" narrative is a bit too much.

Then I saw last night's relay.

Go Phelps! Win all seven! Booyah!

The 4-by-100 free relay was even more amazing, 'cause someone who WASN'T being fussed over like Phelps came in at the tail end of the race and beat the French, specifically Alain Bernard--who came into the race saying, "Of course we'll beat the Americans. It's why we came."
I love France, but that had me screaming near as much as Phelps.

Phelps is a local who's done good. Like Hoff, the women's team swummer. Yeah, I enjoyed the relay as well - we have an exxcellent team. Greves is what - almost 7 feet? He's the next Phelps. Really.

The Olympics - a great diversion. Enjoy. Peace, Linda

I'm a HUGE Phelps fan. I think this guy is all class. Remember in 2004, when he stepped aside and let a teammate of his race, so his teammate would have a shot at his own gold medal? If he hadn't done that, he'd likely have the most gold medals in U.S. Olympic history already. And talk about focus, discipline and grace under pressure. Whew. This is a guy who does calisthenics on the medal stand because he's so focused on his next race.

I know about the DUI, and yes, it's a stupid mistake and an even stupider and dangerous thing to do. Hopefully, he will never drive under the influence again. But we all make mistakes -- fortunately, very few of mine are broadcast in the national media.

Go Phelps!

Didn't catch the butterfly, but caught the 200m freestyle where he won by more than a body length. Whoa.
