I did make it to work, eventually

Now the question: How do you fix a manuscript that's really really good already, but somehow isn't THERE, when you can't pin what the THERE is, because it's not there?

They didn't have a class on this in college.

oooooooh i hate that, because the onus is all on the author to come up with the "something" that gives it that last spark, and that's impossible to put your finger on. once you've moved past all craft elements (and for fiction, all your plot arc key points), it's very difficult because it's not something you can really point out anymore or suggest.
