Angelle has made an excellent point and Bluenana has seconded its worthiness. I bring it to the forum.

In Book 6, Dumbledore tells Harry that there will only be 6 Horcruxes, since Voldemort only needs to split his soul in 7 pieces (and, presumably, one will stay in his body so Harry has something to defeat).

But we count 7 Horcruxes:

1) the diary
2) Gaunt's ring/the Hallow
3) Slytherin's locket
4) Hufflepuff's cup
5) Ravenclaw's diadem
6) Nagini
7) Harry

Furthermore, Dumbledore did not believe that Harry was an "extra" Horcrux, since he thought that Voldemort's intention was to make his final capstone Horcrux after Harry's murder.

Any theories, anyone? Have we somehow miscounted?

I thought that Voldemort didn't realize that he had made Harry into a horcrux when he tried to kill Harry, so that meant there were 8 total divisions of Voldemort's soul. I'm tempted to go back and re-read the ending, though, since it was around 3am when I got to that part.

Nobody read this comment if you haven't read Deathly Hallows!

Yeah, but in 7 it became clear that Voldemort was unaware of Harry's role as a seventh horcrux. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, we are told, imbued Harry with a portion of his soul as an accidental consequence of the backfired curse. His already damaged soul fractured again and the loose 'piece' of Voldemort latched onto Harry.

well shit now I'm confused, I haven't read it yet, and (don't flog me) actually haven't gotten into the series, but my boy said part of Voldemort's soul was in Dumbledore's wand too...of course he is 11

i post this question on my blog too and yet no one has given me a satisfactory response. i wonder if it would be extremely dorky to post up the question on one of those fan sites. i'll bet THEY know!

I know this question is almost two years old (I just discovered your blog and am raiding the archives), but since it seems you didn't get a satisfactory answer - Voldemort indeed didn't know that Harry was a Horcrux - so Nagini was very likely made one only *after* he was"resurrected" in book four, because he thought he was still one Horcrux short. So that's why he ended up with a total of seven, not six.
